WDC Urges KP to Unite to Overcome Obstacles

Dubai: The World Diamond Council President, Feriel Zerouki (WDC), delivered her opening address to the 2024 Kimberley Process (KP) Plenary with a compelling call for unity and action, addressing industry challenges and the need for essential reforms. In her keynote speech, she emphasized the WDC’s commitment to strengthening the KP and promoting an equitable and sustainable diamond industry.

In her address, Ms. Zerouki highlighted the significant progress made this year, including the historic adoption of co-chairmanship of the Kimberley Process, increased transparency in certification processes, and the establishment of the first-ever Permanent Secretariat in Botswana. These initiatives underscore the KP’s dedication to inclusivity, accountability, and industry transparency.

“As the industry faces external pressures, the WDC remains steadfast in championing reforms that benefit stakeholders across the entire diamond supply chain, from producers to consumers,” stated Ms. Zerouki. “Leadership means standing firm on principles that ensure a sustainable future for the diamond sector.”

President Zerouki also reaffirmed the WDC’s role in advancing KP reform, particularly in expanding the conflict diamond definition, a mandate accepted with the understanding of facilitating impactful discussions. She urged all KP participants to engage actively, reminding them of the shared responsibility to deliver on these commitments.

As the session progresses, the WDC seeks to advance discussions on digitizing KP certificates, supporting responsible sourcing, and reinforcing regulatory effectiveness. The organization reiterated its mission to maintain an equitable trade for responsibly sourced natural diamonds, ensuring a level playing field for all stakeholders.

“Our objective is to uphold the Kimberley Process as a pillar of trust and integrity, setting a standard that commands respect across the global diamond industry,” concluded Ms. Zerouki. “Together, we can ensure the KP remains a crucial force for integrity, sustainability, and progress within our industry.”
