Surat: The State of Gujarat in India is now proposing to set up a SEZ (Special Economic Zone) exclusively for diamonds in Surat, possibly the first of its kind in India. According to Gujarat’s Finance Minister Saurabh Patel, the SEZ will be set up in a month or two, as reported in Economic Times.
The state government is keen that Surat should have an international airport and the Finance Minister has revealed that he has met the Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju in this regard. As regards the SEZ, he said that once it is set up the jewellery exporters would be able to bring in diamonds and have them processed in the notified area.
Currently, there are 18 operational SEZs in Gujarat, and there is no data to suggest that there is an SEZ exclusively for diamond.
