GII to Provide Diamond Detection Resource Center

Mumbai: Gemmological Institute of India (GII) a project of Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), has established the Diamond Detection Resource Center (DDRC) with the help of Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) and GJEPC.

The aims and objectives of the DDRC is to identify and certify Synthetic diamonds and help the industry with the necessary information related to the Synthetic diamonds with an end in view of promoting fair trade with the full disclosure.

DDRC is fully equipped with all the necessary instruments required for identification of all types of Synthetic diamonds.

The most important of the machines installed at DDRC are: AMS machine, Diamond Check, Diamond Sure, Diamond View, Diamond Plus, Diamond Spotter, FTIR Spectroscopy, Raman spectrometer and D Screen.

Out of all the above machines the AMS- Automated melee Screening Machine developed by De-Beers is very useful and vital instrument for identifying even very small size diamonds.

The AMS machine can rapidly detect Synthetic stones in parcels of small diamonds ranging from 0.01-0.20 cts in a cost effective manner.

The AMS machine addresses the market need for rapid and affordable detection equipment for smaller sized diamonds, which will be an immense benefit to India.

Today with the help of testing facilities available at DDRC all types of Synthetics and Simulants of diamonds can be identified and ensured that the consumer is never misled.

In fact it is to be understood that improper trading of diamond simulants, synthetics and treated diamonds even in a small minority of cases represents a potential challenge to consumer confidence. Transparency is crucial to ensure that consumers are always aware of exactly what they are buying.

It is therefore vital that everyone working in the industry is aware of what diamond simulants, synthetics and treated diamonds are, even though they may not choose to trade in them.

GII is dedicating the DDRC services to the Indian Diamond Industry. The “Lokarpan” Ceremony was performed by Shri Govindbhai Dholakia, Founder and Chairman, Shri Ramkrishna Exports Pvt. Ltd. and Shri Ramnikbhai Shah, Founder and Partner, Venus Jewel two veterans of the Diamond Industry in the presence of Shri Vipul P. Shah, Chairman GJEPC, Shri Anoop V. Mehta, President , BDB, Shri Bakul R. Mehta, Chairman GII and other most distinguished dignitaries from the industry at a specially organized function at S.G. Jhaveri Center, BKC on Saturday, the 13th December, 2014.

Along with the detection and certification of Synthetic diamonds, the GII Lab is fully operational for diamond grading at DDRC. The Lab will be undertaking loose diamond grading as per international standard and also Jewellery Grading and Certification which is being done at present in its Opera House Laboratory.

GII has also taken up the mission of educating the traders around the country by organizing workshops and seminars. GII has already conducted seminars on Synthetic Diamonds and Coloured Stones in Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Nasik, Coimbatore, Cambay, Ludhiana and Chandigarh. Educating the Jewellers as well as the end user is the task GII has taken up, because Studded Jewellery in the domestic market in India is developing rapidly.

GII certified Coloured gemstone especially for its origin certificate is highly accepted all over the country. It may not be out of place to mention here the fact that GII Diamond Grading certifications are definitely an impartial and independent assessment of diamonds for anyone who is interested in possessing a diamond.
