Milan: The World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO) mourns the passing of Vasant Mehta, a prominent leader of the Indian diamond and jewellery industry, who passed away yesterday at the age 81.
A former chairman of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), a position he filled from 2008 to 2010 after two terms as vice chairman, he represented the Indian industry in CIBJO. He also served as vice president of the International Diamond Manufacturers Association, and was active in the World Diamond Council, the Kimberley Process and the Bharat Diamond Bourse.
“It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of Vasant, who was both a good friend and valued associate,” said CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri. “While a prominent businessman in his own right, he was first and foremost a servant of the industry, in India of course, but globally as well, where in his quiet and dignified manner he devoted much of his time working to the benefit of us all. Our condolences go out to his family, and to our colleagues in India.”
