HRD Antwerp to Stop Grading Loose LGDs

Antwerp: HRD Antwerp announced it will stop grading loose lab-grown diamonds (LGDs) for commercial use, starting from January 2026. This move is intended to clearly distinguish between natural and lab-grown diamonds and strengthen consumer confidence in the natural diamond market. The lab will continue to issue certificates for jewelry that contains LGDs and will still analyze synthetic stones for research purposes.

Reasons for the decision:

  • To distinguish between LGDs and natural diamonds: By ceasing to grade loose LGDs, HRD Antwerp aims to create a clearer separation between the two types of diamonds.
  • To support the natural diamond market: This decision strengthens Antwerp’s position as a leading hub for natural diamond trading.
  • Market confusion: The decision addresses growing market confusion, including the pricing transparency and resale value of LGDs.

What will still be certified:

  • Jewelry with LGDs: HRD Antwerp will continue to issue quality certificates for jewelry that contains lab-grown diamonds.
  • Research purposes: The lab will still analyze synthetic diamonds, but only for research, not for commercial certification.
