Kolkata: Mr. Shaankar Sen, chairman and managing director of Senco Gold Ltd., which runs the chain of Senco Gold and diamond jewellery stores, passed away in Kolkata on Tuesday morning. He was 63.
He was also the vice chairman of All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council, the domestic body responsible for the welfare of the jewellery sector and all stakeholders.
Mr. Shaankar Sen was a shining example of Bengali entrepreneurship and has been instrumental in putting the brand Senco Gold and Diamonds on the National map. From owning just three jewellery stores in Kolkata that he inherited from his father, in the early 1990s to more than 100 across the country today, Mr. Sen has made Senco Gold and Diamonds, the largest gold jeweller from eastern India and has expanded its footprint across 14 states.
In a statement to GJC Chairman Mr. Anantha Padmanabhan said, “It is with immense grief and sorrow we are sharing the tragic news of demise of our Vice Chairman GJC Mr. Shaankar Sen. He had been battling Covid-19 since past few weeks and unfortunately today his soul departed for heavenly abode.
“Mr. Sen was one of the founding members of GJC and was a prominent personality in the Gems & Jewellery Industry. The entire Industry, Senco family and friends deeply mourns this tragic loss and pray the almighty to give strength to the family,” he said.
Mr. Pramod Dugar, Secretary Calcutta Gem and Jewellers Welfare Association, in a statement said, ”Our beloved Mr. Sankaar Sen has left for his heavenly abode today at around 9.20 am. This is a very shocking news for the entire industry.”
Mr. Sachin Jain, MD of Forevermark (India) said, “Mr. Shaankar Sen was a true visionary in the industry. Under his leadership, Senco became the leading jewellery house it is today & a name to recon with across the country. He was a wonderful person who’s goodwill, humility and trust made him one of the most respected in the jewellery fraternity. As our esteemed partner, Mr. Sen believed in our purpose and always supported our business. It was only his faith in Forevermark that took the brand to the East in all its glory. His demise is a huge loss to us and the industry. He will truly be missed.”
Mr. Sen will be remembered as a man with a vision, a dynamic and inspirational leader who always had a smile on his face and immense wisdom.
As a mark of respect, the jewellery trade in Kolkata remained closed at on Tuesday.
